About Georgian Wines

Georgia is considered the birthplace of wine, with a history of wine production dating back over 8000 years. Wine holds a special cultural significance in Georgia, with many families growing their own grapes and producing wine for feasts and traditional banquets. Georgia is home to over 500 grape varieties, more diversity than any other country, with around 40 of these varieties used in commercial wine production. The mild, frost-free winters and mineral-rich soil make Georgia well-suited for viticulture, resulting in pure, high-quality wines. Each year, Georgia produces around 150 million litres of wine from 45,000 hectares of vineyards. There are 18 Specific Viticulture Areas in Georgia, where the grape variety and planting density are regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture, with a maximum yield of 8 tons per hectare. The majority of Georgian wine comes from the Kakheti region, which produces 70% of the country's wine. The other major wine regions in Georgia include Kartli, Imereti, Samegrelo, Guria, Ajaria, and Abkhazia.
